Tradition marked the April 29th Opening Day of the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club. After introduction of Victoria Councillors Chris Coleman, Margaret Lucas and Charlayne Thornton-Joe , club secretary Bill Huot led Oh Canada to the raising of the flag. The sound of bagpipes echoed over Beacon Hill Park as piper Wendall MacLean led members, dressed in special-occasion whites, around the green. Councillor Coleman expressed the City’s appreciation at being invited once again to bowl for the Challenge Cup.
Long-term member Knut Berg was presented with life-time membership in appreciation of the hundreds of volunteer hours he has contributed to the upkeep of the club’s grounds and greens.
The bowling season began with the ‘spider.’ Each member threw one bowl to the centre target (Peter). Winner Irene MacDonald took home the bottle of wine.
The VLBC Executive team of Peter Gilchrist, Don Allan and novice Marie Gorman played the City Councillors in a four-end Challenge Cup game and won.
A high turnout of members filled eight rinks. Players enjoyed an eight-end game of triples, while others watched from the sidelines. Croquet was set up on the lower green providing members with an opportunity to play either sport.
Thank you to the Hospitality Committee and kitchen volunteers for the special tea and home-baked goodies appreciated after the games.
