Croquet and Lighthouses

You never know who you will find on a croquet court in Victoria. One of several players in this year’s CroqCan National Championship was Peter Westaway. He and wife, Birgitte, were avid competitors during the 4 days of play, both being long time players

But they have another life – a keen interest in lighthouses. So much so that they live in one.

In 1998, they purchased the Old Cut Lighthouse on Lake Erie and restored it with the help of an architect who also had a passion for these old and important marine structures.

As a result, the Westaways new home was recognized as the Most Outstanding Historical Restoration in 1999

Sheringham Point Lighthouse

But they also have a major connection to the West Coast. They donated $550,000 through the Westaway Charitable Foundation which is largely dedicated to the arts, medical research and heritage ventures. This donation toward the restoration of the Sheringham Point Lighthouse, located on a rocky outcrop near Shirley on Vancouver Island, is the largest-ever private donation to a lighthouse in Canada.

The Lighthouse was constructed at the entrance to Juan de Fuca Strait in 1912. The structure (along with 11 other lighthouses) was built in response to the wreck of the steamship SS Valencia in 1906, one of the estimated 240 ships that perished on the Island’s treacherous coast
