From fifty to sixty members and visitors attended VLBC’s annual Knut Berg Charity Cup event, with this year’s proceeds going once again to Victoria Hospice. Thirty bowlers competed in a ten-end mixed triples game. Croquet was played on the opposite green.
Although Knut Berg could not attend in person this year, family members attended along with his former neighbour, new VLBC member Greg Brannon who has inherited Knut’s bowls. Knut was definitely with us in spirit!
Summary by Victoria Hospice published in Hospice Matters:
On Monday, we were delighted to attend the Knut Berg Charity Cup event for a fun afternoon of lawn bowling at Victoria Lawn Bowling Club (VLBC). Over $2,600 was raised for Victoria Hospice by the members of the club. The hospitality and camaraderie of VLBC’s members is truly inspiring!
According to the participants, lawn bowling combines the skills of bocce ball and curling. A lawn bowl has an oval side and requires a strategic throwing technique. For Monday’s tournament, new VLBC member Greg Brannon inherited Knut’s bowls and kicked off the competition by delivering one of Knut’s bowls down the green.
Knut Berg is an honorary life member of the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club and has contributed to the club in countless ways over the years. In 1994, the club decided to honour him with this annual tournament. Knut wanted the tournament to be philanthropic, with all proceeds going towards a charitable organization. Since 2017, Victoria Hospice was chosen as the charitable organization of choice and has received a total donation of $8549.75 including this year’s $2,723.00
Thank you to all the volunteers and members of Victoria Lawn Bowling Club for your generosity towards Victoria Hospice.
Following the games, a tasty smorgasbord of sandwiches, savories and sweets were set out by the hospitality crew accompanied by iced tea, tea and coffee. Competitors enjoyed the goodies and visited while Gopal input scores into his computer program.
The winning team by point differential was Barb Marriott, Norma Alison (skip) and Elaine Huber
Thank you members and visitors for such an enjoyable day and for your generous contributions.
