With the greens closed until the end of October and the frosty months looming, VLBC members have turned to winter activities. The Book Group, which meets at the Club on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 1:30 pm from now until March, held their first get together on October 9th.
A varied selection of books were chosen to read and discuss over the season: a dark mystery about a woman who has a doppelganger, an epic love story and family drama set in WWII, the true story of contributions of NASA’s African American women mathematicians, parents coming to terms with their children’s choices/family secrets and betrayals, and a lens on the refugee crisis through the plight of the Sri-Lankan “boat people.”
November: Bellevue Square by Michael Redhill (2017 Giller winner)
December: The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah
January: Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
February: A Place for Us by Fatima Mirza
March: The Boat People by Sharon Bala (2018 Canada Reads)
All Club members are welcome to attend whether you have read the book or not. Discussion about the monthly selection may help you decide whether it is a book for you. There will also be time to bring forth titles of other books you’ve enjoyed and would recommend to others. This is a great way to expand your reading list.
