Over fifty members and guests attended Opening Day on Saturday, April 28th. The afternoon began with singing O Canada and the traditional march around the green led by piper Wendall MacLean.
Club President MaryLynne Rimer welcomed Victoria City officials: Mayor Helps, Councillors Coleman, Loveday, Thornton-Joe and Lucas, and acknowledged past Presidents and new members. Mayor Helps responded, commenting on the long history of the club. Councillor Loveday delivered the first bowl to officially open our 109th season.
A fine Scotch mist did not deter members from filling the green for a short draw game (doubles and triples).
Or prevent the annual Challenge Cup match between the City and VLBC Executive/novice teams. Spectators, watching from inside the clubhouse or protected by umbrellas outside, cheered them on. Despite the growing expertise of the City team, the club retained the Cup.
After playing in the rain, everyone doubly appreciated the warmth of the clubhouse, hot drinks, delicious array of goodies and special cake commemorating the club’s 109th year.
Thank you to the hospitality committee and all the volunteers who made this another memorable day.
And thanks to Nigel Pieloth for taking photos.
