On the weekend of July 21-23, 2017, the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club hosted the 3rd Annual South Island Bowlers Organization (SIBO) Pairs Tournament organized and run by the Burnside Lawn Bowling Club with the assistance of VLBC liaison Games Chair Jo Ann Allan. This annual $1,000 First Prize tournament promotes and supports competitive bowlers and the development of junior competition. The caliber of play by all participants was outstanding and gripping to watch.
Several bowlers from VLBC (Brian Wastenage & Debra Whitman, Don Allan with Anne van Bastelaere, Norma Alison with Ryan Pollard, Chris Jones and Dennis Williams) took on the challenge of competing with some of the top bowlers in the province.
All of the VLBC teams did very well with Don Allan’s team coming into the prize money as 4th runner up in the “A” Division.
The clubhouse and greens were abuzz all weekend with 22 teams registered plus supporters, spectators, organizers and the numerous volunteers it took to make the event come together. In addition to the preparation and setting up of the greens each day, 50+ people were provided with lunch and two snack breaks, plus a Saturday night burger BBQ, tea, coffee and bar service.
A huge thank you goes out to the Hospitality Committee Mary Lynne, Rose, Marg D. and Barb, Marianne and Debra for assistance with planning and purchasing food, kitchen helpers Libby, Caroline, Kirby, Cathy K., Sharon, Chris and Reid, Kathy M., Ken and Brenda, Peter for cooking up all those burgers, our great bartender Jo Ann and Chris for making an urgent bar run.
Accolades were expressed over the abundant variety of food and the accommodation of special food needs and time-change requirements. Comment overheard: “It’s the best deal in town.”
Thanks George for setting, resetting and dismantling the equipment on the greens and Peter for mowing. Last but not least, the cleanup crews after each day’s events.
Thank you to the Burnside/VLBC Clubs and each and every one who participated and volunteered in making this 2017 SIBO tournament such a resounding success!
